One Essex Court is delighted to announce that Dame Elizabeth Gloster has returned to Chambers as an arbitrator.
Dame Elizabeth practised as a Chancery and Commercial QC at One Essex Court from 1991 until 2004, before accepting an appointment as a High Court judge, becoming the first woman to be appointed a judge of the Commercial Court. She was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2013 and was Vice-President of the Civil Division of the Court from 2016 until her recent retirement.
Head of Chambers Lord Grabiner confirmed that Dame Elizabeth Gloster would join chambers with immediate effect and said, ‘Needless to say we are all delighted to be welcoming Liz back to Chambers. As a barrister Liz was always a popular and fun colleague and I know she will add lustre to our commercial arbitration group which has an outstanding reputation here and abroad.’
Dame Elizabeth said, ‘I am delighted to have been invited back to join One Essex Court – it feels as though I have never been gone.’
Dame Elizabeth presided over numerous important commercial and financial markets cases during her time as a Commercial Court judge, including JP Morgan Chase Bank & Ors v Springwell Navigation Corporation and the notable Berezovsky v Abramovich trial. She was Judge in Charge of the Commercial Court from 2010-2012 and oversaw the important move of the Court into the Rolls Building.
As a Lady Justice, she sat on numerous important commercial and Chancery cases, ranging from capital markets, arbitration, shipping, insurance, tax, and insolvency to LIBOR fixing. These included LBG Capital No. 1 Plc v BNY Mellon Corporate Services Limited, Burlington Loan Management Ltd & Ors v Lomas & Ors (a Lehman case), British Airways Plc v Emerald Supplies Limited & Ors, and Gard Marine v China National Chartering Co. Ltd.
