Ian Terry
Mediator
Ian Terry is a CEDR accredited mediator who joined One Essex Court in 2016. He is a former Head of Dispute Resolution at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and also spent five years as the firm’s worldwide Managing Partner. In a legal career spanning almost four decades, Ian has been involved in many of the most high profile commercial disputes of the day. He has broad commercial experience involving many business sectors and jurisdictions. He is no longer practising as a solicitor.
His many clients have included banks, insurance companies, Lloyd's insurance market, pharmaceutical companies, technology companies, utility companies, defence sector companies, professional service firms, leisure companies, breweries, mining and natural resource companies, sports companies and government entities.
Amongst his significant cases were:
representing Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs in High Court litigation, including the Berezovsky v Abramovich and Anisimov and Pinchuk v Kolomoisky and Bogolyubov cases
representing Apple Computers in proceedings brought by Apple Corps (The Beatles) concerning the use of the Apple name and logo in connection with iTunes
representing the Malaysia Mining Corporation in a claim brought by Kleinwort Benson (the leading case on 'comfort letters' in English law)
representing the Provisional Liquidators upon the collapse of BCCI, with responsibility for coordinating US proceedings and recoveries
representing Lloyd's in various sets of disciplinary proceedings and in relation to Central Fund recovery litigation.
In addition to English High Court and appellate proceedings, Ian has extensive experience of arbitration and mediation.
